Representative Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, on the anti-gay marriage legislation currently under debate in Texas. (Many thanks to ristin and nicodemusrat for pointing this out. This should not be missed - be sure to follow the link to her full speech)

An excerpt:

'Let's look at what this amendment does not do: It does not give one Texas citizen meaningful tax relief. It does not reform or fully fund our education system. It does not restore one child to CHIP, who was cut from health insurance last session. It does not put one dime into raising Texas' Third World access to health care. It does not do one thing to care for or protect one elderly person or one child in this state. In fact, it does not even do anything to protect one marriage.

Members, this bill is about hate and fear and discrimination. I know something about hate and fear and discrimination. When I was a small girl, white folks used to talk about "protecting the institution of marriage" as well. What they meant was if people of my color tried to marry people of Mr. Chisum's color, you'd often find the people of my color hanging from a tree. That's what the white folks did back then to "protect marriage." Fifty years ago, white folks thought inter-racial marriages were a "threat to the institution of marriage."'

And in other news, Steve Ballmer has stated, "After looking at the question from all sides, I've concluded that diversity in the workplace is such an important issue for our business that it should be included in our legislative agenda. Microsoft will continue to join other leading companies in supporting federal legislation that would prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, adding sexual orientation to the existing law that already covers race, sex, national origin, religion, age and disability."

A rather beautiful, brief CG short, Isfahan, inspired by the architecture of the eponymous ancient Persian capital. (Downloadable in two sizes, 24MB and 7MB)

Dinner on Friday - well, I'm trying to get around to more cooking again, given it's something I'm very fond of, despite the *cough* confined nature of the kitchen at paw. Still, for a quick concoction, it turned out remarkably well. Four asparagus spears, cut into 2" lengths, a moderate palm-sized floret of broccoli, chopped coarsely, into boiling water, joined by some defrosted chicken strips in a pesto-style coating, and three finely sliced shiitake, and a teaspoon or two of bran. To round off the flavor, a little smoked hot paprika, a dash of garlic powder, and a teaspoon or two of shrimp sauce. (Thai style: ground shrimp, salt. Marvellously stinky :)

A rather disturbingly accurately titled piece, "Expressionless Girl" (585K Flash, with loud music). (Or, there's the soundtrackless animated GIF version (380K), which lends a certain fluidity to the loop)

bosn on Utah: "There is nothing gay out here."
