Any suggestions for furry IRC channels (which ideally don't mind quiet sorts mostly sitting quietly in the background)? Preferably with a low quotient of flaming, though that's easy enough to ignore; although one might suspect otherwise, sometimes, looking at how well-fed trolls often are.

I rediscovered one of my favorite satirical songs! Rush Limbaugh, cheerfully performing a showtune, "I'm a Nazi". Even if you agree with his political stances, it's well worth listening to simply for the quality of the production, the lead vocals produced entirely using clips from his show.

Rather a cool idea, for all involved: a program now running in thirty of Ohio's thirty-three prisons, where inmates set about rescuing "throwaway" dogs, known as Tender Loving Care. (Courtesy of jainasia)

On a similarly positive note, here's quite an elegant, simple piece of engineering: a roundabout which is also a water pump for a small town in South Africa. Fun and highly practical at the same time - isn't that something commendable?

More good geeky fun, next Friday (June 11th), in Fort Mason: Bruce Sterling's giving a talk, beginning at 7pm; $10 donation requested, though not required. (Wish I'd been able to get along to Brian Eno's last year!)

Apparently, in common with other species, ducks have regional accents. It seems London ducks have 'a rough "shouting" quack', whilst their Cornish country cousins 'give off a Cornish burr of a quack, rather like a "giggle"'.

Finally, another quite reasonable quizilla thingummy, with some mildly thoughtful questions along the way..

Hare Daemon
Your HARE DAEMON represents your passive,
kindhearted, and honorable nature. Though you
are occasionally shy with new people, friends
admire your unshakable tranquility, even in the
face of chaos.

Try server: irc.anthrochat.net
Channels: #fursuit #furry and #anthrochat

You will have to register your nickname with nickserve before it will let you in some channels.

The command:
/msg nickserv help register

will tell you how to do that.
Aha! I might just do that. ^_^ I've heard of nickservs before, but never actually come across one.

Eep! Time to scamper - Have I Got News For You is on in a moment. (About the only show I watch on TV - most of my viewing, what there is of it, tends to be fansubbed anime) Worth having a look at.. there are torrents around for the show here and there.
Rush Limbaugh ... Even if you agree with his political stances

Hang on - people who agree with Rush Limbaugh read your journal? More than that - people who agree with Rush Limbaugh can read? =;o
Actually, a friend a few years back always listened to his show every morning.

He had his clock radio set thusly, on the basis that it would be so annoying he'd never be able to just drift back to sleep. I understand it worked well.
My father used to listen to Rush, not because he liked the man but because he absolutely hated him. He tends to pay attention to the insane ramblins of NeoCons like that so as to have a better idea of what the bastards are up to. And, of course, to mock them openly. He's also almost more political than I am.

I'd have probably put an axe through the radio after the first five minutes. If not sooner.

I love it! We definitely need more of this sort of thing, particularly in the face of the insane popularity of Rush's sort of radio program. Ugh, I don't see how anyone could ever stand to listen to him.

I know, it's amazing huh? Ohio actually got this one right, I think.

Hm, next time I'm around some ducks I'll have to actually pay attention to what they sound like. Not that it surprises me, really. It makes sense to me that different animals from different parts of the world might have a different accent. But that's just the sort of things I tend to think about sometimes.
Ho! That Rush was fun! (Now I'm gonna be a Nazi all day :D)

"Tender Loving Care"; "a roundabout"
Those are such good ideas. Especially the TLC program.

Scottish ducks start off their conversations with an "Ach!" and end with a "Laddie".
It's really rather well done, isn't it? And such a brilliantly perky tune, too. ^_^ It puts me in the mind of the immortal Springtime for Hitler.. gods, I need to see that film again someday.

Would a Scottish duck wear its kilt in the horizontal or vertical plane?
Mel Brooks is one of my favorite directors, and without a doubt one of the true comic geniuses. One really couldn't ask for more in a comedy than Blazing Saddles. It is the scriptwriter's goldmine.

I suppose it depends on how upright they stand. If you're talking Ferdinand from Babe, then vertical. If you're talking the duck from Hänsel und Gretel, horizontal. I suppose it could be due to personal preference as well. Ducks born before 1950 may well decide to wear theirs vertical, whereas 1950-1970 may go horizontal. Them born from 1970-1980 may well go au natual and not wear them at all. 90s ducks though, they are a special breed. For they wear not breeks nor trouse, they show off their toned muscles with revealing bikinis and tight thongs.
