Of particular interest to stego_s_aurus - news of a lion on the loose in Columbus.

"Mayor Becky Stinchcomb said she was a bit skeptical about the initial report because in another recent reported sighting of a lion, the animal turned out to be a Great Dane.
"No lion was reported missing in the area."

"We were promised food pills. Instead, we got conveyor belt sushi bars with cute babes miming karaoke tracks on stages surrounded by wall to wall plasma screens playing anime 24 by 7, and robot drinks trolleys that apologize to you when they nearly run you over on the way to the lavatory. In Edinburgh. Three years ago. While sushi rice may have evolved as the original mediaeval Japanese answer to the science fictional food pill, the presentation is infinitely more stylish."

- from Charles Stross' look at the future. It's intelligent, thoughtful writing - unhesitatingly worth reading, if you have a few minutes spare. From the same entry:

"Cognitive philosopher Daniel Dennett suggests that human consciousness arises as we apply our theory of mind, laboriously developed for predicting the likely behaviour of predator and prey species, to our own internal mental states: consciousness is the story we tell ourselves to explain our own actions. Consciousness is a side-effect of story-telling: as a writer, I like that explanation."

This is simply impressive for its grand industrial scale - the most powerful diesel engine in the world. Each cylinder displaces 1820l, producing 7780hp; and no, there are no missing decimal points. ^_^;

And a different variety of heavy machinery: Robosaurus. Seems like it'd be an effective solution to the Mysterious Pile of DOOM foofers sometimes witnesses.

If you're musically minded, MusicOnTheMac has just begun a competition for the best original GarageBand composition submitted, running until the end of July, with $1000 to the winner. The catch, so to speak, is that you grant them rights to use submissions on their forthcoming GarageBand-only net.radio station, and for others to download; all other rights are retained by the composer(s).

Do nuts absorb marinades? I was idly ponding seeing if pistachios would take up something of the sweet, vaguely caramely taste of condensed milk, as part of a cookie recipe. Still, even failure would probably be quite a pleasant outcome.. which reminds me, I need to try making a persimmon pie sometime. I've only tried the fruit once, and adored it immediately.. it had been in the fridge for over a week, and wound up being fabulously sweet. No wonder it's a tanuki treat! (And on that note, amongst the coming set of Buena Vista releases of Studio Ghibli productions is the superb Ponpoko, yay!)

Hm. Seems you can find two realistic sets of pizza icons here, available in original thin-crust, and stone-baked. Aqua: not just lickable any more.

OmniWeb 5.0b6 is out, and does indeed seem to fix the "waiting for available connection" bug which marred b5. It's also much friendlier on processor usage, making it as nimble as (if not better than) 4.5. Definitely looking good. (Any thoughts from those seasoned in the ways of Firefox or Opera?)

And finally, enjoy this pic of Snowdrop, perhaps the cutest mouse in the world, courtesy of bunny_hugger.

Hmmm! Lion vs Great Dane... Only Lion I've ever seen THAT small was a Cub, an I've Never seen a harlequin-spotted lion either (Harlequin danes are the only Danes that could even remotely Pass for a lion sizewise!)
Well, you've seen how folks in furry form can be mistaken for just about anything.. not just the obvious, like "raccoon" for red panda, which is fair enough, but - heh, I really don't need to recount all that to you, do I? ^_^ People just seem to take a snapshot, and then mash their experience into what they've perceived, like a minimally-trained AI game that's only just been started up.

Still, it's a great idea for a Halloween costume for her, ne? Just carry around an endless loop of the soundtrack.. ^_^ (Can you do the dance, though?)

I wonder if it's retrofittable to my diesel station wagon. 7780hp should be just enough to make it up 14th St. off of Market at a pretty decent clip. >;)

Does it have to be a legitimate copy of GarageBand running on a legitimate copy of OS-X?

On the topic of nuts, indeed. >:B That's excellent and unexpected news. I was certain that Pom Poko would be the least likely to see an Disney DVD release, given it's un-Disney-ness theme. Perhaps we'll see Disney release a 'Studio Ghibli' set specifically for fans that will have all the movies and accompanying 'behind the scenes' mega-documentary for each film. Spirited Away's release included it, but Princess Mononoke's was not included (I have it untranslated on three VHS tapes).

I tried OmniWeb 5, briefly. I'll give it another try now that my motherboard battery issue is fixed. Safari seemed to be a little faster, and FireFox seemed to offer all the bells and whistles, and then some (via numerous XPI extensions). I'll probably use FireFox for it's extensibility and cross-platform-ness, and the fact that it can automatically syncronize bookmarks across multiple platforms via FTP.

Well, let's give it at least four cylinders for a smooth ride. That's about 30,000hp. Though there might be cornering issues by that point..

GarageBand - as far as I could see, they simply want the .band object file. (Presumably automagically includes any custom samples - it's a bit awkward, as only Ocelot can run GB, and that means a 14" TV. Not really ideal, but, it's not bad for a small screen) Check out their rules - it all seems fine.

Mmm, Firefox does sound particularly capable.. I'll have to give it a look. I wouldn't be surprised OW will play nicely with its sync mechanism - they're a good bunch, and they're happy to take on board any feature requests one can toss their way. (Part of the reason I like OW, I admit) Is it a portable format - ie, can other browsers potentially parse the file? I'd imagine so, but I'm wondering if anyone's actually done so.. ^_^

Cross-platform is good. OW is only OS X, but, that's of necessity - it's heavily based on OS X. I really otter see what Firefox is like - more options are always a good thing.

BTW, another series nobody ever seriously expected is apparently coming, too: Kodomo no Omocha. Very fast-paced, very gentle, sometimes melodramatic - sometimes within the same scene. Supposedly, it'll begin appearing next Spring - it's a long series, though, of around 100 episodes, so gods only know what sort of release schedule they'll be planning. Worth a look, anyway. ^_^

"...the animal turned out to be a Great Dane."
I thought I saw a dragon once...but I was at the zoo, and it turned out to be a peacock.

"the most powerful diesel engine in the world."
Which brings me to the subject of: The Sausage Tree (Kigelia pinnata).

" Robosaurus"
Good lord. It's like, one step up from being Hicksville Attraction No.1, but it's not because hard work actually went into making it, and not just for the dirt rally arena. I would enjoy terrorizing western interstate US gas stations with that monster. Hehe "Fill 'er up!" ^.^

"best original GarageBand composition"
I keep my talent out of the garage. *haughty look*
...
It's actually my bedroom. But that's a damn sight prettier than a garage for classical music!

"Do nuts absorb marinades?"
Well, if you can make room me in a refridgerator, I'll be a guinea pig. ^^

"...persimmon pie..."
I have yet to figure out a pomegranate. I NEED HELP!!! XD

"Aqua: not just lickable any more."
...Wha..? *stops licking aqua; eyes pizzas; continues licking aqua*

"seasoned in the ways of Firefox or Opera?"
I like opera. Italian opera. *kicks little feets* (-___-) HO HO HO!!!

"Snowdrop"
Aww! So cute! A ball of snow, would I have said.
