Does someone of a culturally educated inclination know whose work this originally was?

The whole Worth1000 competition's well worth a look, too - placing toons in classical artwork. ^_^

Looks like the work of Van Eyck.

But don't quote me on that. Could also be one of the other dutch painters from that era.
Indeed, the style is a good match.. I couldn't find the piece in his area on abcgallery.com, or with a quick Google Images search, but as you say, it could easily have been another of his contemporaries. It's a little frustrating, as it seems familiar, but from where, I've no idea.
hummm without pulling out my art books I will take a stab at Rubens that or Jan Vermeer.
Have you ever invited someone in to see your etchings? =:D

I really should investigate famous painters more. I'm passingly familiar with a few specific artists (Dalí's an old favorite especially, along with Mucha and Bosch), but lack any broader artistic education, and the net is right here..

Come to that, there was a recent BBC4 series, "The Power of Art", which I've got on DVD-R, but unwatched as yet. Maybe I should remedy that.
